Fearful Symmetries is a very lengthy short story collection, awarded with the Bram Stoker Award, featuring dozens of short stories and very detailed story notes. The collection includes the stories: "Identity Crisis"; "Spare the Child"; "The Mechanical Boy"; "The Night is Freezing Fast"; "Yesterday’s Child"; "In the Fast Lane"; "Nobody’s Perfect"; "No Pain, No Gain"; "The Ring of Truth"; "The Cutty Black Sow"; "Love Letters"; "The Pleasure of Her Company"; "Prodigal Sun"; "Carmella and the Missing Piece"; "The Roadside Scalpel; Newspaper Man"; "The Wager"; "Time Enough for Sleep"; "Triptych di Amore"; "Looking for Mr. Flip"; "Between Floors"; "A Mind is a Terrible Thing"; "Under Your Skin"; "Rehearsals"; "Yog Sothoth Superstar"; "Lux et Veritas". Introduction by Rick Hautala. Cover Art by Wendy Saber Core. Copyediting by Michael Bailey From Publishers Weekly: The 27 reprints in Monteleone's story collection span the last 22 years and are as much a chronicle of the course horror fiction has taken in that time as they are of the author's career. Several are solid dark fantasies that strive for a subtle sense of unease rooted in the troubled emotions of their characters. In the best of them, "Rehearsals," a Twilight Zone–type memory tale, a man watches his childhood replay itself as a painful stage drama he's desperate to rewrite. "Love Letters" is a skillfully underplayed blend of supernatural horror and psychological suspense, written as an exchange of letters in which one correspondent reveals an increasingly inhuman sensibility. Monteleone (Eyes of the Virgin, etc.) has used virtually every classic horror trope, from vampires in "Triptych di Amore," in which a seductive lamia destroys celebrity artists over the centuries, to Lovecraftian monsters in the tongue-in-cheek "Yog Sothoth, Superstar."
Charlie Cerrone thought he had it al l—a loving marriage, a good job, a nice home and financial security— until the night his wife betrayed him and his entire world came crashing down. Angry and confused, Charlie wanders the streets of Boston after dark, dazed and searching for answers, trying to figure out why his wife has apparently taken up with another man and why she's been frequenting a strangely ominous and otherwise abandoned building late at night in one of the worst neighborhoods in the city. Throughout the cold winter night, Charlie descends deeper and deeper into a nightmarish journey that encompasses his past, present and future, a terrifying and surreal odyssey that leads him through the darkest alleys and most dangerous streets of a haunted city, and that will eventually put him face-to-face with the horrific riddle behind his own troubled existence and the shocking mysteries of Apartment Seven. Grab your copy at Amazon. Synopsis: Young bodies are piling in Rome. Far from ordinary, the victims have a few things in common: having listened to certain music prior to being chased, mauled, and partially eaten in overgrown areas along the Tiber and Aniene riverbanks. Days or weeks later, and elsewhere, their brains expand, their skulls bursting, the bone solidity compromised by several drilled holes. Alfredo Vanacura, a hypochondriac Carabinieri Corps ex-Marshal, is called back from retirement to investigate. How does the case connect with petite, white-snake-wearing Dark Mary, the most powerful hard-rock DJ Rome has ever seen? Her secret is either sepulchral charisma, or something else entirely. Dark Mary has become ever-more popular, people worship her. And Martyna, her necrophotographer lover, her mortal enemy, is sick to the bone with jealousy, or maybe something more savage. Meanwhile, Father Sebastiano, a pale and sickly priest with porphyria, coughs up a mysterious black clay every time he performs last rites. He hides something beneath his church, in the bowels of Rome… Paths and destinies crisscross, inevitably impacting each another in an extreme, decadent, virulent tale of terminal love.
